Each year, the Museum of Beer & Brewing (MBB) celebrates beer by awarding The Karl Strauss Award, the highest award that the MBB celebrates for brewing excellence. Over the years, such notables as The Siebel Family, Charlie Papazian of the Brewers Association, Dan and Deb Carey of New Glarus Brewing Company and others have been recognized. This year, this award will be presented to Jim Hughes and Jim McCabe of the Milwaukee Brewing Company on Sunday, September 23rd, starting at 5 pm in the Wisconsin Club.

"Roll Out the Barrels" by Gary J. Hess delivers a thorough and fascinating history of barrel making and what was the largest independent cooperage in Wisconsin. Frank J. Hess and Sons Cooperage operated in Madison, Wisconsin for 62 years and made white oak beer barrels for breweries in over 35 Wisconsin communities and five states. The company also manufactured and repaired wine and whiskey barrels.
