Gary is a native of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He studied at UW-Oshkosh and, following his studies there, served four years as a counterintelligence specialist in the US Army.
He interned at numerous German breweries in the 1960s and graduated Technical University of Munich, Weihenstephan, where he earned a degree as Diploma Engineer in Brewing Science and Beverage Technology.
He and his family moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he worked for three years as brewmaster at the Antarctica Paulista Breweries in Sao Paulo and Estrella, Brazil.
Gary joined Miller Brewing Company in 1976 and, after working in Milwaukee WI, Fulton NY, Eden NC, and again in Milwaukee, he retired as Principal Brewer in 2000.
He is currently active in international brewing consulting and numerous professional and charitable organizations.
Published works include articles in Brauwel, a co-authored chapter in the Handbook of Brewing, a co-authored chapter in The Practical Brewer and numerous papers presented regarding brewing technology and brewing history.
He is a founding member and a past-president of the Museum of Beer & Brewing, a past-president of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas and a past-president of District Milwaukee, MBAA. He is currently president of the Milwaukee Liedertafel men’s chorus, president of the Wisconsin Singers District and president of the North American Singers Association.
Gary is a current member of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, Deutsche Malzmeister und Braumeister Bund, Weihenstephan Alumni Association and the Museum of Beer & Brewing.
Gary and his wife Marianna have two married daughters and five grandchildren.
